A Joyful Return to the Capital in Kyoto - How a Mother Comes to Terms with Grief at Losing Her Child
The Natural Landscape Becomes Synonymous with Sentiment. In Poem 1 She Sings to Herself, and in Poem 2 The Boatmen Sing in Unison until in Poem 3 Her Pain Surfaces, and in Poem 4 Her Mind Swims in the Pain. In Poem 5 She Realizes That Mind Can Triumph Over Pain. In Poem 6 She Gathers Shells to Which She Attaches the Pain of Loss, and in Poem 7 She Turns Her Pain Into a Memento Mori. When, Finally, She Sees Her Old House in Kyoto, Once Again Sees Her Garden, In Poem 8 She Knows That Pain Can Be Put Aside, and in Poem 9 in Her Familiar Garden, That Seedling Pines can Turn Pain to Joy. WEEK EIGHT -「蜻蛉日記」974年 Ｋａｇｅｒｏ ｎｉｋｋｉ By the Mother of Fujiwara Michitsuna (936-995) 藤原道綱の母 A personal diary, in Three Books, covering twenty years of married life. Literariness: A wrenching personal account of marital life that includes poems and incidents related to the lady's marriage, the birth of her son, her husband's other lovers, her years of prayer and her temple life, and the final thoughts about the world as she found it. （English text: Seidensticker, Edward. tr. The Gossamer Years - The Diary of a Noblewoman of Heian Japan. Tokyo: Charles Tuttle, 1964, pp. 34, 37-38, 40-41, 101-02.)
Book I: 954-968 Fifteen years of marriage to Fujiwara Kaneie. Reading 1-A English、Reading 1-B 日本語The opening passage indicating that she writes in the first person to relieve herself from inner torment and lonliness. Reading 2-A English, Reading 2-B English, Reading 2-C 日本語, Reading 2-D 日本語 Her discovery that Kaneie is seeing another woman, and her reaction to his infidelity. Reading 2-E, 2-F English, Reading 2-G, 2-H, 2 H1,2-I 日本語 In the second year of Tentoku (958), the lady sums up her life of unrequited love in a choka, a long poem, that is a highlight of the entire work. Kaneie responds with his own answer also in the long poem form. It again is a heartfelt summary of his life and love for this lady.
Book II: 968-971 The years of prayer with visits to Karasaki, Ishiyama, and Hatsuse temples. Reading 3-A English, Reading 3-B 日本語 The lady's feelings about her only son who wants to rejoin his father. Reading 3-C English, Reading 3-D日本語 While in seclusion at a Buddhist temple and visited by another lady friend, she refers to the Narutaki, a river flowing in front of the temple in Kyoto. There is a place by the same name in Nagasaki, the home of von Siebold's medical clinic, the Dutch East India Company's last appointed physician to Dejima island, the first Westerner to be allowed to have a practice outside of that confining island, in the 1820's. This is for my Nagasaki students. Reading 3-E English, Reading 3-F日本語 A final indignity from Kaneie forcing the lady to quit the temple and return to Kyoto.
