A MATTER OF CHARACTER III

WHAT TO DO WITH CHARACTERS TOO NUMEROUS TO REMEMBER IN THE TALE OF GENJI
APPENDED TO LECTURE NOTES FOR SEVENTH WEEK: 'SUICIDE, AMNESIA, AND THE BOBBING BOAT.'
Chapters 34-41, 42-50, 51-54

REMEMBER THAT MAJOR CHARACTERS OCCUR AS PAIRS, EXCHANGING POEMS AND CONVERSATION.
THERE ARE MANY CHARACTERS, BUT THEY ARE NEVER ON THE STAGE AT THE SAME TIME.

MOST EVENT IN THE TALE OF GENJI IS ONE-TO-ONE, THAT IS, IN A CAST OF THOUSANDS,
THE TETE-TO-TETE, IN THE BEDROOM OR THE BACKGROUND, IS THE PRIMARY MODE OF ACTION.
HERE IS A LIST OF WHAT I PERCEIVE TO BE THE MAIN COUPLES IN EACH GROUP OF CHAPTERS.
WHERE APPROPRIATE, THE PAIRING IS INDICATIVE OF PRIMARY POEM EXCHANGES.
I GIVE THE PAGINATION FOR THE SEIDENSTICKER TRANSLATION ONLY.

53 TENARAI - notice the possessing spirit who appears to Ukifune, this time a man, a
monk. May this type of spirit not be closer to history and further

very much a figment of Murasaki Shikibu*s mind.
