OTOGIZOSHI-MORAL FABLE-

OF THE MUROMACHI PERIOD

15-16TH CENTURIES

AUTHOR AND DATE OF COMPOSITION UNKNOWN

「小敦盛」

室町時代の御伽草子

作者・成立年未詳

As the story has it, the wife of Atsumori had gone into

hiding on the fringes of the Western hills of the capital

when she was informed that her husband of the same name

had been cut down. Neither believing the reality,

perhaps in a trance, nor knowing where to turn, she lie down

and cried profusely. The event was so unusual that,

though she tried to cry out, no sound issued forth.

She was so traumatized and despondent that

she pulled her clothing over her head and

remained on the floor.
